CELPIP Speaking Task 7: Expressing Opinions Framework

Template Structure

This framework is designed for the 90-second response time in Task 7.

Opening (15-20 seconds):

"In my opinion, [YOUR CLEAR POSITION ON THE TOPIC]. I strongly believe that [MAIN ARGUMENT], and I'd like to share a few reasons why."

First Supporting Point (25-30 seconds):

"First and foremost, [REASON 1 WITH SPECIFIC EXAMPLE]. For instance, [CONCRETE DETAIL OR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE]. This clearly demonstrates [HOW IT SUPPORTS YOUR POSITION]."

Second Supporting Point (25-30 seconds):

"Furthermore, [REASON 2 WITH DIFFERENT ANGLE]. When we consider [BROADER CONTEXT OR COMPARISON], it becomes evident that [SUPPORTING DETAIL]. This is particularly important because [CONSEQUENCE OR IMPACT]."

Conclusion (15-20 seconds):

"To conclude, I'm convinced that [RESTATE MAIN POSITION] because of [BRIEFLY MENTION BOTH REASONS]. Therefore, I would definitely [YOUR FINAL RECOMMENDATION OR STANCE]."

Filled Example

Prompt: "Some people think students should choose their own courses in high school, while others believe schools should decide. What's your opinion?"

Opening (15-20 seconds):

"In my opinion, students should have the freedom to choose their own courses in high school. I strongly believe that student choice leads to better academic outcomes and personal development, and I'd like to share a few reasons why."

First Supporting Point (25-30 seconds):

"First and foremost, when students select subjects they're genuinely interested in, they become more motivated and engaged learners. For instance, my younger brother struggled with mandatory science courses but excelled once he could focus on arts and literature classes. This clearly demonstrates that personal interest drives academic success."

Second Supporting Point (25-30 seconds):

"Furthermore, self-directed course selection prepares students for real-world decision-making responsibilities. When we consider that these teenagers will soon choose university programs and career paths, it becomes evident that practice in academic decision-making is invaluable. This is particularly important because it builds confidence and critical thinking skills."

Conclusion (15-20 seconds):

"To conclude, I'm convinced that student-directed course selection is beneficial because of increased motivation and valuable life skill development. Therefore, I would definitely support giving high school students more autonomy in their academic choices."

When to Use This Framework

This framework works best for Task 7 prompts that ask for your personal opinion on debatable topics, such as education policies, lifestyle choices, or social issues. It's particularly effective when you need to take a clear stance and defend it with logical reasoning rather than simply describing pros and cons.

Delivery Tips

• Pace yourself steadily - aim for 2-3 words per second to avoid rushing through your planned content
• Use rising intonation on transition phrases like "Furthermore" and "For instance" to signal you're building your argument
• Emphasize key opinion words like "strongly believe," "convinced," and "definitely" to show confidence in your position
• Leave 2-3 seconds of buffer time at the end rather than trying to fill every second, as natural conclusions sound more authentic than rushed endings
