What Does the CELPIP Reading Test Include?
The CELPIP Reading test takes 55 to 60 minutes and has 4 parts. Part 1 is Reading Correspondence — you read an email or letter and answer questions about the writer's purpose, tone, and key details. Part 2 is Reading to Apply a Diagram — you match written information to a visual such as a chart, map, or schedule. Part 3 is Reading for Information — you read a longer informational passage and answer comprehension questions. Part 4 is Reading for Viewpoints — you read two opinion pieces on the same topic and compare the writers' perspectives.
All texts reflect real-life Canadian contexts. Questions are multiple choice. You manage your own time across the four parts within the total window.
How CELPIP Reading Scoring Works
CELPIP Reading scores are reported on the CLB scale from 1 to 12. Your score reflects your ability to understand the main idea, locate specific details, infer meaning, and interpret tone and purpose across different text types.
Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) requires a minimum CLB 7 in Reading. Canadian citizenship requires CLB 4. A CLB 9 or higher maximizes CRS points for immigration applications.
How to Prepare for CELPIP Reading
Skim each passage for the main idea before reading the questions. Then read questions first for Parts 2 and 3 so you know exactly what information to find. In Part 4, focus on identifying each writer's position and the arguments they use to support it.
Practice time management — allocate roughly 10–15 minutes per part. PrepCelpeep offers Reading practice questions for all 4 parts with instant feedback and answer explanations to help you understand why each answer is correct.
