What Does the CELPIP Speaking Test Include?
The CELPIP Speaking test takes 15 to 20 minutes and has 8 tasks. Task 1 asks you to give advice to a friend about a problem. Task 2 asks you to talk about a personal experience. Task 3 asks you to describe a scene shown in an image. Task 4 asks you to make predictions about future events based on a visual. Task 5 asks you to compare two options and persuade a friend to choose one. Task 6 asks you to deal with a difficult or unexpected situation. Task 7 asks you to express and defend your opinion on a community issue. Task 8 asks you to respond to an unusual hypothetical situation.
All responses are recorded through your computer microphone. You are given preparation time before each task and then a response window to speak your answer.
How CELPIP Speaking Scoring Works
Each Speaking task is scored on four dimensions: Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment. Scores range from 1 to 12 on the CLB scale. Your final Speaking score is the average across all 8 tasks.
Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) requires a minimum CLB 7 in Speaking. To score high, speak clearly, stay on topic, use varied vocabulary, and fully address what the task asks — do not simply describe what you see but engage with the scenario.
How to Prepare for CELPIP Speaking
Use the preparation time to organize two or three main points before you start speaking. Open each response with a direct statement that addresses the task, then support it with specific details or examples. Avoid long pauses, filler words, and repetition.
Practice speaking aloud every day — even 10 minutes of timed responses makes a significant difference. PrepCelpeep offers AI-powered scoring on all 8 Speaking tasks, with feedback on coherence, vocabulary, and how well you fulfilled the task. Record yourself and listen back to identify patterns in your speech.
