What Does the CELPIP Writing Test Include?

The CELPIP Writing test takes 53 minutes and has 2 tasks. Task 1 is Writing an Email — you are given a scenario and asked to write an email of about 150–200 words. The email may be formal or informal depending on the context. Task 2 is Responding to Survey Questions — you read a short survey and write two responses expressing your opinion, each about 150–200 words.

Both tasks assess your ability to communicate clearly in writing for everyday Canadian situations. Responses are scored by trained raters using a standardized rubric.

How CELPIP Writing Scoring Works

Each Writing task is scored on four dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary Range, Readability, and Task Fulfillment. Scores for each dimension range from 1 to 12 on the CLB scale. Your final Writing score is the average across both tasks.

Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) requires a minimum CLB 7 in Writing. To score high, your response must directly address the task, use a variety of vocabulary, organize ideas logically, and demonstrate control of grammar and punctuation.

How to Prepare for CELPIP Writing

For Writing Task 1, always open with a clear purpose statement and close with an appropriate sign-off. Use formal language for professional emails and a more conversational tone for friendly ones. Aim for 150–200 words — going over or under can affect your score.

For Writing Task 2, state your opinion clearly in the first sentence and support it with specific reasons or examples. Vary your sentence structure and vocabulary to demonstrate range.
