Comparing & Persuading Framework

CELPIP Speaking Task 5: Comparing & Persuading Framework

Template Structure

Opening (10-15 seconds):

"I understand you're trying to decide between [OPTION A] and [OPTION B]. After considering both options, I'd strongly recommend [YOUR CHOICE] because it's the most practical solution for your situation."

Comparison & Reasoning (35-45 seconds):

"Let me explain why [YOUR CHOICE] is better. First, [MAIN ADVANTAGE with specific detail]. On the other hand, while [OTHER OPTION] might seem appealing because [ACKNOWLEDGE ITS BENEFIT], it actually has a significant drawback: [SPECIFIC DISADVANTAGE]. Additionally, [YOUR CHOICE] offers [SECOND ADVANTAGE], which makes it much more [BENEFICIAL OUTCOME]."

Persuasive Conclusion (10-15 seconds):

"So when you weigh all the factors, [YOUR CHOICE] is clearly the better option. I'm confident this decision will [POSITIVE RESULT], and I think you'll be really happy with this choice."

Filled Example

Scenario: Your friend asks whether they should buy a used car or lease a new car.

Opening (12 seconds):

"I understand you're trying to decide between buying a used car and leasing a new car. After considering both options, I'd strongly recommend buying a used car because it's the most practical solution for your situation."

Comparison & Reasoning (42 seconds):

"Let me explain why buying used is better. First, you'll own the car completely and won't have monthly payments forever, which gives you financial freedom after a few years. On the other hand, while leasing might seem appealing because you get a brand new vehicle with warranty coverage, it actually has a significant drawback: you're essentially renting forever and never build any equity. Additionally, buying used offers much more flexibility since you can modify the car however you want and drive as many kilometers as you need without penalty fees."

Persuasive Conclusion (13 seconds):

"So when you weigh all the factors, buying used is clearly the better option. I'm confident this decision will save you thousands of dollars in the long run, and I think you'll be really happy with this choice."

When to Use This Framework

This framework works perfectly for Task 5 scenarios where you need to help someone choose between two clear alternatives, such as career decisions, housing options, vacation plans, or major purchases. It's most effective when you can identify concrete advantages and disadvantages for each option and present a logical argument for your recommendation.

Delivery Tips

• Speak with conviction: Use a confident, advisory tone as if you're genuinely helping a friend make an important decision
• Emphasize key comparisons: Slow down slightly when presenting the main advantages and disadvantages to make them crystal clear
• Use natural transitions: Pause briefly between sections and use connecting phrases to guide your listener smoothly through your reasoning
• End persuasively: Your conclusion should sound definitive and reassuring, like you've solved their dilemma completely
