What Is the CRS?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to rank Express Entry candidates. It factors in your age, education, work experience, and — most importantly — your language proficiency.

Your CRS score determines whether you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. The higher your score, the better your chances. Of all CRS factors, language proficiency is the one you can improve the fastest and that has the biggest impact on your total score.

What Is CELPIP?

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a computer-based English language test developed by Paragon Testing Enterprises at the University of British Columbia. It has a direct 1:1 mapping to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, making it simple to understand your score.

CELPIP is officially designated by IRCC as proof of English language proficiency for immigration to Canada. It is available at 70+ test centres across Canada, with results available in 4-5 business days.

Why Language Scores Matter in 2026

Three key developments have made language proficiency more important than ever:

1

Job Offer Points Removed

As of March 2025, IRCC removed 50-200 CRS points previously awarded for valid job offers. Candidates who relied on job offer points now need to make up the difference elsewhere — and language is the most accessible lever.

2

Category-Based Draws Dominate

In 2025, the vast majority of Express Entry invitations were issued through category-based draws rather than general rounds. Strong language scores help you qualify for more categories and stay competitive.

3

Language Is Your Best Lever

Strong language proficiency accounts for up to 136 base CRS points plus up to 50 bonus points through skill transferability. No other single factor offers this much room for improvement.

CELPIP to CLB Conversion

CELPIP uses a direct 1:1 mapping to CLB levels. A CELPIP score of 7 equals CLB 7. No conversion tables or calculations needed — the number is the same.

CRS Points for Language (First Official Language)

Single applicants scoring CLB 10 or higher in all four skills earn the maximum 136 CRS points from language alone. With a spouse, the maximum is 128 points.

Minimum CELPIP Scores by Program

Each immigration program has different minimum language requirements. Meeting the minimum makes you eligible — but scoring higher significantly improves your CRS ranking.

ProgramMinimumCompetitive
Federal Skilled Worker (FSWP)CLB 7 in all 4 skillsCLB 9+
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)CLB 7 (TEER 0/1) or CLB 5 (TEER 2/3)CLB 9+

Important: You must meet the minimum CLB in every skill individually. Average scores across skills do not count.

Provincial Nominee Program Requirements

A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile, virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply. Here are the language requirements by province.

CELPIP for Canadian Citizenship

Canadian citizenship applicants aged 18-54 must provide proof of language proficiency. The minimum requirement is CLB 4 or higher in Speaking and Listening.

CLB 4+ required in Speaking and Listening
CELPIP General LS (70 minutes) tests only Listening and Speaking
CELPIP General (full 3-hour test) is also accepted
Expired PR language test results can be reused if they originally met CLB 4

Skill Transferability Bonus Points

Up to 50 additional CRS points are available when strong language skills (CLB 7+) combine with other factors. Scoring below CLB 7 in any skill forfeits eligibility for these bonus points entirely.

How to Reach Your Target CELPIP Score

4 to 8 weeks of focused daily practice is typically enough to improve by 1-2 CLB levels. Here is a proven approach:

1

Take a Full Mock Exam

Establish your baseline score across all four skills. Identify which skills need the most improvement.

2

Focus on Your Weakest Skills

Concentrate your practice on the skills with the lowest scores. Even one low skill can hold back your entire CRS calculation.

3

Practice Speaking & Writing with AI

These are the hardest skills to improve alone. Use AI scoring to get instant feedback on what to fix.

4

Simulate Test Conditions

Take timed mock exams under real conditions. Build stamina and comfort with the computer-based format.
