What Part 3: Listening for Information looks like on test day

You will hear a monologue — one speaker sharing information. This might be a tour guide describing a location, a manager giving instructions, a community announcement, or an instructor explaining a process.

The passage runs about 1.5 to 2.5 minutes. The speaker presents facts, instructions, or descriptions in an organized way.

Questions test your ability to identify the main topic, capture specific details (names, numbers, steps), understand the purpose of the information, and recall the order of steps or events described.

How to score CLB 9+ on Part 3: Listening for Information

  • Since this is a monologue, there are no speaker changes to guide you. Focus on the structure: introduction, main points, and conclusion.
  • Take brief notes on numbers, names, dates, and steps — these are commonly tested details.
  • Listen for organizational markers like "First", "Next", "Finally", "The main reason", and "Most importantly".
  • If the speaker describes a process or set of instructions, pay attention to the order.
  • The main idea is usually stated in the first few sentences. Don't wait too long to identify it.

Common mistakes on Part 3: Listening for Information

  • Trying to write down everything instead of capturing keywords, numbers, and proper nouns.
  • Missing comparative information (more/less than, most/least, only) which the questions almost always hinge on.
  • Confusing the speaker's main point with a supporting detail. The two are tested separately.
  • Letting one missed answer derail your focus on the next question. Move on quickly — guessing is fine.
