What Part 1: Reading Correspondence looks like on test day

You will read 2 to 4 short messages — usually emails or letters — exchanged between two people. The total text length is about 400 to 600 words. You have about 10 minutes to read and answer.

The correspondence covers everyday situations: a tenant writing to a landlord, coworkers coordinating a project, a customer contacting a business, or friends making plans. The tone ranges from formal to casual.

You will answer 5-8 multiple-choice questions about the main purpose of each message, specific details mentioned (dates, requests, conditions), the tone and attitude of each writer, and what actions or responses are expected.

How to score CLB 9+ on Part 1: Reading Correspondence

  • Skim all messages first to understand the overall situation, then read the questions, then go back for details.
  • Pay attention to who wrote each message and when. The order of messages matters for understanding the context.
  • Look for requests, conditions, and responses. If Person A asks for something, check how Person B responds.
  • Watch for tone shifts between messages — is someone becoming frustrated? Apologetic? More formal?
  • The correct answer is always supported by specific text in the messages. If you can't find evidence, reconsider your choice.

Common mistakes on Part 1: Reading Correspondence

  • Skipping the email subject line and sender. Both contain context the questions ask about (relationship, urgency, formality).
  • Confusing what was requested vs what was delivered when the email describes both. Track each separately as you read.
  • Picking literal answers when the question asks about tone, intention, or implied meaning between the lines.
  • Spending too long on Part 1. Aim for 10 minutes max so the heavier Parts 2–4 still have enough time.
