How to Prepare for CELPIP: A 4-Week Study Plan
Learn the format, find your starting level, know the score you need, and then practice the way CELPIP's own study packs recommend. Here is how, with a week-by-week plan.
Based on CELPIP's 2026 study packs and checked against celpip.ca in October 2026.
Start with a free question in every partStep 1: Learn exactly what is on the test
CELPIP-General has four tests in a fixed order (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and 20 task types that never change. Knowing what each part asks, how long it lasts and how it is scored is the fastest win there is, because nothing on test day will surprise you.
Step 2: Find your starting level
CELPIP's study packs point to two free official practice tests on celpip.ca. Take one early, under real timing, to see where you stand in each skill. You can also try one free question in every task type on PrepCelpeep to see which parts feel hardest.
Step 3: Know the score you need
Most immigration programs set a minimum CLB level in each skill, and each CELPIP level equals the same CLB level. The Federal Skilled Worker program needs CLB 7 in all four skills, and Express Entry gives the most first-language points at CLB 10 or higher.
For listening and reading, CELPIP's own score charts give a rough idea of what that means: Level 7 is about 27 to 31 correct answers out of 38 in listening and about 24 to 28 in reading, and Level 9 is about 33 to 35 in listening and about 31 to 33 in reading.
What CELPIP itself recommends
Untimed practice. Work through a part with no time limit, without rushing or guessing, then ask what slowed you down and which skills would get you through it in time.
Identify the question types. After you check your answers, label each question as general meaning, specific information or inference. If one type goes wrong more often, go back and work out exactly why the right answer is right and the others are not.
Build a note-taking system. Use practice audio and passages to find a note style that works for each part, with your own abbreviations and symbols, so you already have a system on test day.
Keep a vocabulary journal. Note new words from transcripts and passages, guess the part of speech and whether the meaning is positive or negative before you look them up, and use them in your own writing and speaking.
For speaking, record yourself, then transcribe a recording and spend 20 to 30 minutes editing it: fix the grammar, add transitions and specific details, and vary your vocabulary. You cannot do this on test day, but it builds the skill.
Our 4-week CELPIP study plan
This is the plan we suggest for someone who already uses English every day and needs to move up a level or two. Stretch it if your gap is bigger.
| Week | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Format and starting level | Read the guide for each part, take a free official practice test with real timing, and list your two weakest parts. |
| 2 | Listening and reading | Practice part by part, first untimed and then timed. Label every mistake by question type, and settle on your note-taking system. |
| 3 | Writing and speaking | Learn one structure per task, write emails and survey responses of about 150 to 200 words, and record, transcribe and edit your speaking answers. |
| 4 | Timing and the full test | Take a full mock test under real timing, review every mistake, and spend the last days on your weakest parts, not your strongest. |
Test week
Book early: sessions run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. On the day, arrive 45 minutes early, because check-in closes 15 minutes before the start and latecomers get no refund. Your results arrive online in 3 to 4 business days.
CELPIP preparation FAQ
How long does it take to prepare for CELPIP?
It depends on the gap between your current level and the score you need. Take a free official practice test first: if you are one level away, a focused month is a realistic plan; a bigger gap needs more time with English every day.
Can I prepare for CELPIP for free?
Yes. CELPIP offers two free practice tests and free study packs on celpip.ca. PrepCelpeep has one free practice question in every task type, free guides for all 20 parts and tasks, and free courses.
What is the best way to practice CELPIP Speaking?
CELPIP suggests recording your answers, comparing them with its performance standards, and transcribing and editing a recording for 20 to 30 minutes to make it stronger. Practice out loud with a timer, using the real preparation and speaking times.
Should I take a full CELPIP mock test?
Yes, at least once before test day, under real timing. It shows you whether you can keep your pace for about 3 hours and which skill needs the most work.
Which CELPIP skill should I study first?
Your weakest one, according to a practice test. Most people gain the most by fixing their two weakest parts, not by polishing their strongest.
