Try a free question in every partThe short answer: it depends on the score you need
CELPIP is not a pass-or-fail test. It gives you a level in each skill, and each program asks for a minimum level. So the real question is how hard it is to reach your level.
CELPIP's own score charts show the difference. In listening, Level 7 is about 27 to 31 correct answers out of 38, and Level 9 is about 33 to 35. In reading, Level 7 is about 24 to 28 out of 38, and Level 9 is about 31 to 33. At Level 9 you have room for only a few mistakes.
What makes CELPIP hard
Every listening clip plays only once, and you cannot pause it. Every part has its own timer, the test moves on when the time is up, and you cannot go back. The parts get harder as you go: Listening from Part 1 to Part 6, and Reading from Part 1 to Part 4.
Writing gives you 27 minutes for the email and 26 for the survey, about 150 to 200 words each. Speaking is recorded on a computer with fixed preparation and speaking times, so you have to organize your ideas in 30 or 60 seconds and keep talking until the time ends.
What makes it easier than people expect
The format never changes: there are 20 task types, and you can learn every one before test day. All the speakers have Canadian accents. No points are taken off for wrong answers, so you should answer every question, and you get paper and a pen to take notes.
Most of the situations are everyday ones: coworkers planning a project, a customer asking for help, neighbors planning a party, an email to a friend. The hardest parts use more formal language, but even those follow a predictable shape.
Which parts are the hardest
Listening Part 6 is designed to be the hardest listening part: one speaker talks for about 3 minutes in a formal, prepared way, with some specialized language, and reports different people's viewpoints. Reading Part 4 is the hardest reading part: a formal article with two or more opinions, then a reader's comment with blanks.
For speaking and writing, the hardest part is usually timing: filling 60 or 90 seconds with organized ideas, and writing a complete, well-organized response in under half an hour.

Is CELPIP hard? FAQ
Is CELPIP harder than IELTS?
It depends on the person. CELPIP uses only Canadian accents, is fully computer-delivered, and records your speaking instead of using a face-to-face interview. Our CELPIP vs IELTS page compares the two in detail, including the score conversion.
Is it hard to get CLB 9 on CELPIP?
It takes high accuracy: CELPIP's charts put Level 9 at about 33 to 35 correct out of 38 in listening and about 31 to 33 in reading, plus strong writing and speaking.
Can you fail the CELPIP test?
Not exactly. CELPIP reports a level in each skill. What matters is whether those levels meet the minimum for the program you are applying to, such as CLB 7 in all four skills for Federal Skilled Worker.
Which part of CELPIP is the hardest?
CELPIP says the parts get harder from Listening Part 1 to Part 6 and from Reading Part 1 to Part 4, so Listening Part 6 and Reading Part 4 are designed to be the hardest. Many people also find the timing in Speaking and Writing difficult.
How long should I study for CELPIP?
It depends on the gap between your current level and the score you need. Take a free official practice test first, then plan your time around your weakest parts.
